Number of Drug-Related DUI Arrests Up in Phoenix

The number of arrests for drug-related DUI (driving under the influence) has risen in Phoenix, Arizona, according to a recent article in Ahwatukee Foothills News. Officials from the Phoenix Police Department have attributed the rising numbers to an increase in abuse of both illegal and prescription drugs, as well as to a greater level of enforcement individuals suspected of DUI. Drugs that can lead to DUI charges include illegal drugs, medical marijuana and prescription drugs. With Phoenix law enforcement ramping up efforts to combat DUI, it is vital that you have a strong attorney to represent you if you are ever accused of this criminal offense.

The Ahwatukee Foothills News article notes that even though the percentage of total DUI arrests has dropped, the number of drug-related DUI arrests has gone up. The news story cited statistics from the Arizona Governor's Office of Highway Safety (GOHS)—the number of DUI arrests dropped by 13 percent in 2012 when compared to 2011, but the number of DUI arrests specifically related to drugs rose by 12 percent. The director of the state's GOHS noted that the availability of prescription drugs is one of the factors driving the change.

Furthermore, a sergeant from the Phoenix Police Department said that many individuals who are pulled over for drug-related DUI do not actually realize that it is against the law to drive while under the influence of prescription drugs or medical marijuana. The sergeant also went on to state that Arizona has a force of hundreds of officers who have received special training for identifying the signs of drug impairment. The news story highlighted the fact that law enforcement in the area has ramped up efforts for catching impaired drivers, particularly through a DUI task forces and DUI checkpoints.

It is clear that law enforcement is taking a full force of action against those they believe to be guilty of driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Because of this, you cannot take any chances if you are arrested for DUI. Law enforcement officers and prosecutors will likely see you as just another piece of their anti-DUI cause, whether or not your arrest was actually merited.
